The Team hits The Field

The Power of WHO !

As with all parts of your company, it begins with the team. A plan and vision are great but without the people to put the plan in place, it is left with the owner/ leaders, who have a million other things to get done.

This means this likely won't either.

When I hire people, I look beyond my core values and those types of fancy things that consultants like to go on about.

A mission for your company is of course important, but I like to hire from characteristics.

Walk with me here. Core values are often things like:

  • Integrity
  • Honestly
  • Hard Working
  • Teamwork

All major important values. But those are broad-term things. And being honest.....you shouldn't be hiring people without those built-in values.
But they do not help you ensure they are a fit for the position. Only your culture.

If you need a very creative and independent person that can find solutions quickly, then honesty and hard-working alone are not specific. You need characteristics.

Examples:

  • Intelligent
  • Responsible
  • Attentive

Characteristics will ensure that the person you are placing is a fit for the position so they can achieve milestones. Theirs and the companies.
The worst thing that happens all the time is we place people who are not best suited for a specific position, they struggle and then they tune out hoping they can keep their job. Because they know and you know it's not a fit.

TODAY'S LESSON:

I would like you to take the vision that you created and ask yourself, in a perfect world, if you needed to describe or BUILD the person or people that will best be positioned for developing better client on-boarding (or just better in all ways), what would that list look like?

Spend 20 silent minutes and pretend it's a game and you are listing the description of that character.
Go wild.

When you are finished ask yourself if that person works for you now or WHO you know that fits that (even outside your company).

If they exist at all, they can exist for YOU and your company.
That's who I want on my team and if this is important to you, you will see how to get them.

Guess what....those kinds of people influence others around them as well. Replication.

Here is a book called The Power of Who that might help you find better people and interview to hire A players.
If you keep getting low B's or C's (or worse), you will find yourself building ALONE.

Get really picky on who you hire....and get really active on who you FIRE.

Until next time.
