Know No

Sep 26, 2024

From the desk of Klark.

I'll start by reinforcing how powerful this particular marker is by telling you it is not a coincidence that it is #23—sharing that number with the GOAT, Michael Jordan.

Know No simply means you must already understand the incredible opportunity saying no has. Or you need to explore that skill. In business and in life, owning your own time and life is a ninja-level and I think more people should be good at it.

Think about things this way. Sit and think of people you look up to. I mean those you really appreciate and value their self-confidence and the success of that. They are brazenly selfish with their time but absurdly generous when they do give.

One of their attributes is they say NO often. You love that about them, and deep down, you know it's a winning formula.

GUESS WHAT. They want you to be the same way. Successful people are annoyed by mediocre people. It's simply true. Ask them. They will remind you.

So learn this yourself. Test it out. You might find that the only people that matter are the people that matter. Many will vampire you with never expecting to contribute. Be generous but be smart.

Here are some Klarkisms (I 100% stole them)

  • Less is more.
  • The less I do, the more I make
  • My time only increases if I make it increase
  • If it's not a HELL YES, it's a No.
  • People that serve my Yes, get my Yes

This is where I will tell you or remind you what 41 Markers is. This is the first book that my team and I live by and run our business by. Our 41 Markers are our navigational beacons. They are the bumpers on the track to keep us moving ahead and fast.

These images will show you how simple and direct the book is.

Know No

I am pretty good at this. As a human and as a Restopreneur™ I fall down from time to time and chase shiny objects. But I am generally pretty specific about my time. I have a very rigidly tight digital calendar that we coach all new clients with.

The Ideal Week. This is an exercise of time blocking that is simple and helps you own your calendar so no one else will. Consider these big sacred chunks of time where your employees and others see the Virtual Closed Door to your office or find it empty. You are away and not Google for them during that time.

If you are interested in becoming an absolute small business superstar so you can become a medium-sized megastar, check out our R[OS]™️ program. Limited spots because it is deeply immersive and our time is detailed. We currently (at the time of this writing) have a few spots. Check it out here: Elite Restoration Coaching Program

The Hazard of No

While trying to be productive and forward-focused with saying no, I will share where I struggle with this.

I am a giver. If someone asks me for advice, a contact, or a resource, I default to YES.

Want me to be on a podcast, travel here, do this....you might get a no. But a text, email, or phone call asking for help....you probably have my attention.

"But how is that a bad thing?" It is fine and it's actually an honor when you are able to provide good help. But the issue comes in that you have this reputation and you end up with a nationwide or worldwide network and the volume grows to so many people that these little interactions become very often.

Then like everyone else the time vs money paradigm comes in. You now are giving away more than you sell or charge for. If you invert this pyramid, you start to experience the challenges.

I have heard it said that the best givers are often broke and eat last. Noble yes. But eventually, this causes hardship, and concern. The encyclopedia stops teaching and people lose out on good info and the giver wilts because they cannot do what they love well anymore. What a wicked trap, right?

You can overgive. People can be Askholes !

But here is the catch. Those asking are doing so because you invited them. They don't have any real sense of how many you integrate with. Most of us think we are the only one.

THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE

I struggle here. I don't mind telling you. The different parts of my brain and heart conflict. Maybe you have this same issue.

But stopping isn't the answer. Balancing is.

I am also very proud of my team for building RBA- Restoration Business Academy. This is our brain library. Content, lessons, coaching, and more.

We skillfully crafted a great way to bridge these waters. Build a domain where access and interaction is met with a reciprocal solution.

Now, when we find ourselves being asked to help with issues, we have a solution for those at almost all sizes and budgets. It makes the relationship easier to create. If someone needs business help, to make themselves more money, but wants it free, then the ability to say NO is simpler.

We feel much better about the vortex in this situation.

You are, of course, invited to join our membership model. We would love to have you join us and share your success. RBA Academy Registration

In closing, I would like you to look at how you give by saying yes and how you give (your team, family, and future) by saying No.

It is simple, but not easy.

Thank you for sharing this lesson with me. My teaching is my learning.
